Welcome to the website of the British soprano Lucy De Butts. Lucy is based in Germany and performs internationally as a concert and opera singer. As a soloist, highlights of the current season include Lucy’s debut at the Berlin Philharmonie with Haydn’s The Creation, alongside Haydn’s The Seasons at the Hamburg Laeiszhalle and a tour of Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the Bachakademie Stuttgart.
Concert tours have taken Lucy far and wide, from the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles to the Lebanese International Choir Festival in Beirut; from Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires to the Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moskow; from the National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts in Taiwan to the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest. She has performed under the baton of renowned conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Sir Roger Norrington, Rene Jakobs and Vladimir Jurowski.
Opera
Highlights of Lucy's operatic career include Sandrina in Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera at the Zürich Festspiele, Olympia in Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann at the Opera Academy Bad Orb and The Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute with the Weimar Lyric Opera Studio. She sang Monica in Menotti's The Medium with the Berlin International Opera Company and Belinda in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with the Hampstead Garden Opera Company in London. As an ensemble singer with the 'English Voices' Lucy has performed at the Festival d'Aix en Provence under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado, and Zürich Opera House with Laurence Cummings.
NDR Vocal Ensemble
Lucy has been a permanent member of the North Germany Broadcasting Company's Vocal Ensemble ('NDR Vokal Ensemble') since 2022. Comprising of 21 professional singers, the ensemble performs throughout northern Germany and appears regularly in radio and television broadcasts.
As an ensemble singer Lucy performs extensively with the Bachakademie Stuttgart. She has also performed with the Zürcher Sing Akademie, Ensemble Corund, the St Gallen Bach Stuftung, the Basler Madrigalisten, Chorwerk Ruhr and Orlando Ensemble Freiburg.
Emerald Ghost
In 2019 Lucy founded Emerald Ghost with the Italian pianist Giovanna Gatto, a vocal-piano duo specialising in contemporary classical music. Their first CD features song cycles by Aaron Copland and Carlo Galante and was released in 2021 on Paladino Records. Listen on Spotify.
Education
Lucy read History at Edinburgh University before embarking on a career in music. Having sung recreationally since the age of 16 alongside violin and piano studies, it was the two fantastic summers with Hellmuth Rilling's Stuttgart Festival Ensemble in 2006 & 2007 that inspired her to take the plunge and pursue a career in music. She has since gained Masters degrees in Classical Singing from Trinity College of Music in London and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).
Lucy complimented her studies with masterclasses with well-known personalities such as Edda Moser, Monserrat Caballe, Birgid Steinberger, Gerd Uecker, Marijana Mijanovic, Susan McCulloch and Rudolf Piernay. Lucy was selected to participate in the British Youth Opera, the European Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Montepulciano, the Lyric Opera Studio Weimar and the Abingdon Summer School for Solo Singers. Lucy currently studies with Nena Brzakovic and Marina Viotti.
Teaching
Lucy teaches singing at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, as well as offering private lessons in Berlin and Hamburg. Please send an email if you are interested in a trial lesson.

Sie fühlt sich auf der Opernbühne genauso zu Hause wie auf dem Lied- und Konzertpodium. Zu den solistischen Höhepunkten der aktuellen Saison zählen Lucys Debüt in der Berliner Philharmonie in Haydns Schöpfung, Haydns Jahreszeiten in der Hamburger Laeiszhalle sowie eine Tournee der Bachakademie Stuttgart in Bachs Matthäus-Passion unter der Leitung von Hans-Christoph Rademann.
Ihre Konzertlaufbahn umfasst Auftritte an einigen der bedeutendsten internationalen Konzerthäuser und Festivals, darunter die Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, das Lebanese International Chorfestival in Beirut, das Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, die Zaryadye-Konzerthalle in Moskau, das National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts in Taiwan und das George-Enescu-Festival in Bukarest. Mit dem Chor English Voices trat Lucy beim Festival d’Aix-en-Provence unter der Leitung von Pablo Heras-Casado sowie am Opernhaus Zürich mit Laurence Cummings auf.
NDR Vokalensemble
Lucy ist seit 2022 festes Mitglied des NDR Vokalensembles. Das Ensemble, bestehend aus 21 professionellen Sängerinnen und Sängern, tritt in ganz Norddeutschland auf und ist regelmäßig in Radio- und Fernsehsendungen zu hören.
Als Ensemblesängerin tritt Lucy häufig mit der Bachakademie Stuttgart auf. Sie arbeitet außerdem mit der Zürcher Sing-Akademie, dem Ensemble Corund, der St. Galler Bach-Stiftung, den Basler Madrigalisten, dem Chorwerk Ruhr und dem Orlando Ensemble Freiburg.
Emerald Ghost
Im Jahr 2019 gründete Lucy gemeinsam mit der italienischen Pianistin Giovanna Gatto Emerald Ghost, ein Gesang-Klavier-Duo, das sich auf zeitgenössische klassische Musik spezialisiert hat. Ihre erste CD enthält Liederzyklen von Aaron Copland und Carlo Galante und erschien 2021 bei Paladino Records. Hören Sie Emerald Ghost auf Spotify.
Ausbildung
Lucy erwarb einen Masterabschluss in Geschichte an der Universität Edinburgh, bevor sie ihre Karriere auf die Musik ausrichtete. Nachdem sie seit ihrem 16. Lebensjahr neben dem Geigen- und Klavierstudium auch in ihrer Freizeit gesungen hatte, waren es zwei inspirierende Sommer mit Hellmuth Rillings Stuttgarter Festival-Ensemble in den Jahren 2006 und 2007, die sie ermutigten, eine Karriere in der Musik anzustreben. Sie erwarb einen Masterabschluss in klassischem Gesang am Trinity College of Music in London (2009) und an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK, 2014) in der Schweiz.
Weitere Impulse erhielt Lucy durch Meisterkurse mit namhaften Persönlichkeiten wie Edda Moser, Montserrat Caballé, Birgid Steinberger, Gerd Uecker, Marijana Mijanović, Susan McCulloch und Rudolf Piernay. Sie nahm zudem an verschiedenen Kursen teil, u. a. bei der British Youth Opera, der Europäischen Akademie für Musik und Darstellende Künste in Montepulciano, dem Lyric Opera Studio Weimar und der Abingdon Summer School for Solo Singers. Derzeit studiert Lucy bei Nena Brzakovic und Marina Viotti.
Gesangscoaching
